SUSTAINABLE TAILINGS

The Program “Identification, quantification and extraction (bio) of minerals / value elements contained in tailings deposits” aims to identify, quantify and prioritize high-value elements present in tailings or mining blocks in Chile, whether they are in operation or closed, in order to propose and develop technologies, preferably (bio) hydrometallurgical, that allow generating business models that consider different actors in the chain of value for the transformation of Mining Environmental Liabilities (PAM) into assets, as part of a strategy of exploitation and final disposition. As a result of this Program and its Projects, manuals and standards will be developed that allow other PAM managers – similar to the deposits studied – to adopt / adapt these in / to their own business models. This technological program is of special relevance for a mining country like Chile, which given its history today has more than 700 tailings deposits.
